JD 640 rake

I need to get the input yoke off the input shaft of the gearbox of my JD 640 in order to renew the seals and bearings. The yoke is threaded onto the shaft with no set screw or key. The problem is to keep the shaft from turning. The inner half of the shaft is splined and a collar slides on the splines when the in-out lever is operated. The collar engages the gear which turns and turns a gear on the output shaft. I have the square input tube in the vice and I have been trying to turn the shaft with a wrench on each of the two pawls on the collar. I have heated the yoke and applied wax but no joy yet.

The pic shows one of the two pawls on the collar. JD probably has a special spanner to grip the two pawls. I could probably make one if I have to. It would be similar to a fire hose spanner.

I have had the shaft off both of my rakes. Something in my memory makes me want to say that shaft is backwards thread. Maybe someone else will post and say for sure. Tom

If I'm thinking correctly threads in yoke would have to be RH type to stay threaded on gearbox shaft when wheel drive shaft turns forward to power gearbox. As tires roll forward shaft on gearbox is turned to the right.

Did you heat yoke very hot?

Yes, if it were a left hand thread it would come off during use. I haven't heated it hotter than just a small red area so far. I am hoping to not have to remove the U-joint.
