Thought I wound start new post; first thanks for the help- restrung baler cleaned out hook and all is working; now it seems my strings are too loose...when I pick up a bale I have about 6-8" of clearance between bale and string. I mean the strings are too loose...any thoughts? Thanks.

I'll assume you know about the tensioner adjustment behind the knotters. Even, consistent windrows and make sure the hay is dry are the 2 things that come to my mind that could be related to your issue

I may have my tensioners on the back too loose...screw them down more? Are there other tensioners? Thanks

Turn the cranks at the back of the bale chute about 3 turns tighter keep both cranks evenly tightened

many balers have restrictors int the bale chamber. Located on the sides of the chamber, like small angle irons bolted vertically on the sides. If your baler doesnt have them, you might want to add them.

if I put more pressure with the cranks- it makes my strings tighter...also makes the bale heavier?

Yes. It makes it stuff more hay into the same size bale.

I had an old MF #9 baler that gave me the same sort of loose stringed bales (the wife used to call them my purse bales). Anyways, found out that there were no hay restrictors in the chamber, so added some cut off hockey sticks. They helped, plus cranking down on the bale tensioner cranks. I also found out that when I was baling grass hay they weren’t too tight of bales, but when I bales an area with lots of alfalfa, the bales were tight as a brick, without changing a thing. Have since ‘upgraded’ to a NH 273, but keep the MF for a back up (it still works and what’s one more piece of equipment)
