Where can I get some good old fashioned rivets for my mower? These ones I buy now are garbage I think they’re made from chrome plated bubblegum

I was afraid of that . Used to be some that were black and them things were as tough as boiled owl

What sort of problem are you having with the rivets? I've used generic knife section rivets and never had a problem so long as they were mashed TIGHT. Section rivets are made of a fairy "soft" iron or steel and depend on being squashed TIGHT so there's no wiggle, or the section will quickly get loose and LOOSER and LOOSER.

John Deere still has AH116874 "plain" section rivets, about $18.50 a pound.

If you have never used the old type rivets you don't know the difference, the rivets sold now are too hard they don't smash out and fill up the space evenly nearly as easily as the old style ones. I figure I have a life time supply and then some of the older type.

They won’t clench worth a dang and the sections pop off . Maybe I’ll order a box of those from John Deere and see how they are

I had the same problem until I figured out the rivets you have require them to be set all the way with a rivet set. If I did them like my Dad and I did years ago with the ball of a hammer, they do not swell up correctly in the hole leaving the section loose even though it feels tight. Once you use the knife for a while, it comes loose. So I learned to use the rivet set my Dad had to not only set the rivet tight in the knife, but then use the rounding part to start and finish the rivet. That is the only way I could get those rivets to be tight. A few years ago I decided to get lazy and put in the bolts. That way I can easily fix a knife it I knock a section loose in the field.

I carry my rivet tool with me and makes changing sections easy . I always hated rivets on a swather with a fixed reel trying to chop a rivet off while a tine pokes you in the head and trying to get a good swing on the hammer but on a sickle mower they are easy and I think they work better because there is nothing sticking up to keep the hay from going over the bar

Since you have the size, check with mcmaster carr

Use a air impact with a rivet bit. Does a fantastic job...course I do it in front of the shop. Not as good in the field although I have replaced them in the small grain swather using air from the grain truck.

Rowse (maker of rakes and sickle mowers) out of Burwell Nebraska markets good rivets. I don't know where they get them, but I've been happy with them.

sv, I got lucky couple years ago, the local TSC store got some of the old style malleable rivets in. They're in my shop now. I'd sooner have rivets than those D bolts. Have to take the hold downs off to change sections on the newer to us 1120 mower. More tools, more time to do. Five minute job usually with rivets and the sickle-fix tool, one wrench to fit the tool. Just watch where you put your fingers when using the tool or you will let the juice out!

Not lately I need to go again Though my outer shoe is almost wore out my inner shoe I got from them Is almost wore out after a hundred acres of cutting I think most of that wear comes from mowing roadsides though

I really like the rivet tool for the mower works pretty slick . I do like bolts on the swather because most times you can just take the nuts off leave the bolts and replace the section and put the nuts back on .
