I was told the first two numbers after the x are the year made. Yours would be a 1998.

Nope, the two numbers after the X do not represent the year. Numbers were somewhat in sequence, but no years ever published.

You could try and contact the dealer from which it was sold. Is there a dealer sticker on the baler. They may have records when the baler was received or sold. That would be the closest you could get on year it was built.

Sorry John.
With "newer" stuff, with serial number there should be records of when warranty first started.
