Wondering if I Should Try Wedges In My Baler

The hay around here is SUPER dry this year, in contrast to the mud bog we had last year.

It seems that I have to turn the clamps on our NH269 baler down super tight to get a decent bale.

I have some wedges, I was thinking of installing one or two on each side of the chamber?

Am I thinking right?

I had to keep adding tension as well but I got it where it needed to be after ten or so turns.

I always use at least one set of bale wedges but more often than than not two or more are needed in dry short hay, you can also bale early in the morning with some dew on the hay to help, but yes for sure on the wedges

Last year doing straw I couldn’t get my tension tight enough
even with them as tight as they would go

You should always have at least one pair in. Two would be better.

That is exactly what I'm baling.... short, dry hay. The cows love it, as we've fed a little out already... but man.... it takes three men and a boy to turn the tension cranks down hard enough to make a decent bale during the day, when it's dry.

Dew does help... we have baled past dusk a couple of times... the problem there is, with so much tension in the chamber, a little bit of dew makes the bales go the other way over the course of about ten minutes of baling.

One minute, you're making bales that are light and barely tight enough. Next thing you know... the dew sets and you're suddenly turning out super-super dense bricks.

I have 3 sets of wedges on my 276. It makes a nice, dense bale.

I have two 268's. One has three wedges,
other has two. Thinking I may want to put
a third set in it. Suggest at least two
for you to start with.

I have 273 have always had 6 in mine.. three each side.. Kinda depends if you have the "cutouts" for the bolts on the
side of baler...
