cranky farmall H

My '46 H [6V] is hard to start. The way it goes is...push ignition. It turns over once....push again. It turns over one more time. I give it a minute to "rest". Push ignition 3rd time - and it usually cranks up.
Runs fine.

It's a "frankentractor" Dad cobbled it together from 3 different Hs

It has a new battery.... Been going this way for years.

Suggestions....

When you say "push ignition", I assume you're referring to the starter button or starter switch?

What kind of battery cables are on it? 6 volt systems need 0 or 00 gauge cables to work properly--about as big around as your thumb. Check those and clean ALL connections real good.

This should probably have been posted in the Farmall or the Tractor Talk forum. You'd probably get more replies there.

Being 6 volt everything has to be in good order. Heavy gauge battery cable, good working starter, clean battery connections, etc. Never seen a 6 volt system just crank once you hit the starter button but
usually will get going after a couple of tries. If you really want to fix it go to 12 volts. If you want to keep 6 then go through the list and make sure things are what they need to be. Make sure the ignition
system is in good shape also so the tractor starts easily once you get it cranking.

Check your connections, but sounds like timing might be a little advanced.

This is why I like 12V.

pull the starter and check the armature bushings. if the are worn...side to side movement, the starter draws big amps to try and turn over. also, try
running your battery ground cable directly to a starter mounting ear. that for sure will give you a good ground.

all it takes is a good starter, good 6v battery and good heavy 2/0 cables and a good ground and good switch and she will spin! people neglect
these items then complain it wont turn over then put in a 12 volt battery. sure funny it spun over good from the factory with 6 volts. its called
preventative maintenance.

The Farmall H that I grew up driving started the same way. Battery was good. Generator was good. Battery cables were good and of the correct size. Nothing we could do ever made it any better. That's just how it was. By comparison, I own a 1950 Farmall H. All original 6 volt system. It starts like it is 12 volt.

I'm with rustred on this one, a 6 volt system needs large battery cables. You'll get voltage through the small ones used on 12 volt systems, but you'll loose a huge amount of amperage.
