mccormick baler

I have what I think is a Mccormick Deering 50 baler [twine]. Where on it can i confirm what model and serial # it has. It was shed kept till last yr to make way for newer equipment. Also is it easy to find parts for it?
Can't decide whether to sell as/is or get it running first, and then selling - would the extra work even be worth it - given its age? It's got good metal.
Dad quit using it, cause said he was getting tired of walking alongside while it was baling. It was kinda finicky. But as a former 14 y.o., it put out some heavy, tight bales.
I like that it is engine-powered, so tractor strength doesn't matter.
For those who've sold equipment how does FB marketplace compare to craigslist?

I don't think they put serial numbers on the earlier balers. The 50, 56 & 57 had a big flywheel on the left side up by the hitch & the 45 has it
hiding behind the tin where the PTO shaft goes into the baler. Don't recall the 45 having an engine drive, but it's possible. Can you post a picture?
If so, you need to get permission from the mod's on this site first, seeing how you are new here. Running vs non-running equipment does change the
value, but not as much as a baler that can actually make bales reliably. Don't know about selling on FB or Craigslist. Would never buy or sell on
either of those sites. There is a free photo ads & classifieds right here on the forum. They're at the very top of the page on the left hand side
under "Marketplace". I would be interested, but my luck always dictates that the machine I would like to have is nowhere near me in Wisconsin.

You aren't going to get much for an old IH baler. Lots of people don't like them. Parts can be a problem. I wouldn't put money into it to get it working. Maybe some time to get things moving wouldn't hurt.

If the 50 has the same place for the serial number as the 45 baler, it will be stamped on the upper right hand front side of the bale chamber.

I have no sentimental memories of it, so IMO Id sell it for whatever someone was willing to pay. And thats not likely to be much. Theres little to no demand for old engine powered balers unless you have some amish around. If it was finicky back when it was used regularly, it wont have gotten better sitting in the barn.

I still have a 55. Wire tie, pto. Made in '53. So your 50 is even older. They make an oddball 15"x19" bale. The length is nonadjustable at 36".They are capable of making 100pound bales(at least the wire tie will) IH never quite got string tie down. So they were not the most reliable at tieing. There are few if any parts available.Honestly(sadly),it's not worth much more than scrap. The engine might be worth $100 if it runs/not stuck. However, please don't scrap it. Donate to a living history museum as a static display.

The model 50 was IH's first automatic baler, so its a curiosity from that standpoint. Is it a practical baler to get running and use? Probably not. One way to tell a 50 is it has a front wheel, but then many were modified to remove the wheel and weld the drawbar rigid.

Last one I saw was at local tractor club show-auction some 15+ years ago. Good running unit. Could not get a $5.00 bid on it. Engine would be most valuable part of it to put on a static show display.

Your best bet to sell would be on YT photo ads. Maybe some 'collector' would be interested. Advertize on both cL and Market place. that gets the word out...
