New Holland 630

In the market for my first round
baler. Been square baling all my
life. Getting old and fat and my
kids are just about ready to
leave the nest. I'm going to
look at a New Holland 630
Tuesday afternoon. Guy says it
has one bad bearing in the
roller right above the pickup.
Been barn stored and unused for
a few years. Says someone else
is doing his hay for hay sharing
and he's older and doesn't have
to mess with it anymore. He
wants 3950 for it. Hoping to get
it for 3500. All other 630s in
my area are 5 to 8 thousand.
Pics look good but what other
things should I check out other
than overall shape? An old
farmer told me to look for
grooved rollers. Thanks in
advance. My budget is 4
thousand, so I'm limited

Look it over really good, see if you can get it on a tractor so you can get it turning and listen for gear box and bearing issues. Check the belts out, they aren't cheap. If it has electronics then they have to be checked too. Neighbor has a 630 he's put tens of thousands of bales through but he's had a lot of issues with the electronics over the years.

No electronics on any 630 I've seen, just wires and switches for the twine motor control and full bale alert.

New belts can be had for $135 a piece ready to install and shipped to your door at https://usbalerbelts.com/NH.htm . I bought 6 belts for my 630, best money spent on it.

Bearings are easy to replace and I think there are only 5 or 6 different sizes on the whole machine. I keep one of each on hand. Older baler, so cheap to replace.

Most expensive thing on the machine that can fail is the CV shaft, especially if it has not been greased right. Big $ to replace, but it will run on a normal shaft.

I believe the most expensive issue would be the sledge frame and gears. Pretty sure itll run couple thousand in parts alone. Not uncommon on those series of balers. Check it out good. Other than that, good baler.

Thanks for the help. I went and
looked at it and the first thing
he told me was that he wasn't a
mechanic. The two big
compression rollers that move as
the bake gets bigger were laying
in there in a 45 degree angle
clear up out if the top of the
baler. The chain was broke and
idler tore off. He was baling
and didn't know it was a bad
bearing and the roller came
clear out if the flange and
ripped through the side wall
chamber and he continued to bake
until the dust cleared and he
kicked it and took it to the
barn. Big roller had a grove
around the shaft and the too
rubber roller was worn and
angled enough that the two
outside belts were rubbing the
chamber wall. Shame to because
it was a really clean baler and
barn kept. Just no maintenance.
Going to go look at a Hesston
530 and 540 and a Krone 125
tomorrow after work
