How hard would it be to put a starter on a hand crank unit? This one also has a mag. Im guessing I would need a different front cover and a ring gear or would it already have one? We bought a running unit

How can we answer that question from a distance?

You're gonna have to go and take an up and personal look and see what you've got!

That being said, many years ago I did just what you are proposing to a VE4D.

It had NO provision for a starter in the flywheel cover tinwork and NO ring gear. I swapped those parts from a donor unit.

Seems to me the flywheel wasn't even machined for a ring gear, but my memory is not 100% certain on that.

And, likely that experience has no bearing whatever on your engine, it would depend upon how it was "spec'ed" out when built for the original buyer.

I have put starters on 4-5 VF4ds and a VH4DM Had to cut the shroud and add reinforcement to it where the starter bolts and make a bracket for the back end of the starter, The flywheel will have a rough cast rabbit for the ring but will need a little lathe work, they use set screws 1/2 in wheel and half in ring gear I have a couple extra starters. Cut the hole a little bigger them use !/8th" plate made to fit the starter you can then move the plate and starter to fine fit the starter and ring gear fit then weld plate to shroud. The VH4 I use every week now was used to start jet aircraft and used a large generator/motor for starting the engine and charging a large battery for to start the planes. email open if more questions.
