NH 311 timing

Just watched a bunch of videos and read a bunch of posts and read the manual about baler timing for the 311.
So if gear box arm is vertical between marks
And the two Drums or disks On left end of knotter have the three dots or marks within1/4”
And the feeder forks are aligned between marks then the baler should be in time.
The problem I see are 3
1) the timing marks on the drums at left end of Knotter are about 1/2 inch apart
2) chain from gear box to knotter is slack and cannot be tighten within spec. About and inch or more of vertical movement on chain.
3) when knotter is tripped and needles start moving forward they should meet the leading edge of plunger about 1/4” beyond edge of plunger. My needles come up near the back of the plunger(guessing about 13” in). The needles do not hit anything in plunger and go into knotter where they should.
So how can needle to plunger placement be so far off?

I'm guessing the needle lift shaft is powered by a chain so loosen chain then get needles oriented correctly to plungerhead then tighten chain.

With no hay in chamber "out of time needles" will cycle properly when needles are activated but shortly after hay is in chamber problems will begin especially if plunger head stop is not operating as designed.

the needles never hit the plunger they have to be in it to make the tie and the plunger is Not what breaks needles its the hay the plunger pushes that snaps them,, get a operator manual you need one,, the vids you are watching my help you understand but the nook will take you step by step through the process and have pics to show you what it needs to be set at,,, a baler is one thing you 100% need a correct ops for,,

The dots on knotter drive do not line up they put them on there as a starting point. There should be decals on feeder arm cover explaining timing if not get operators manuel.

Grab the needle bail connecting rod at the top and jerk it rearwards to be sure the knotters are actually in the home position. Do this after setting the plunger crank arm between the chisel marks and before checking the knotter clutch punch marks.
