Flywheel Shear Bolts, specifically NH balers

Obviously you can get these from your local dealer. Thanks to dealer consolidation nearest dealer is 30 miles away. Does anyone have any experience with regular soft bolts from local hardware store? I beleive these are 2 inch 5/16 bolts. Baler is NH 200 series. If you do happen to get flywheel shear bolts from another source than the dealer, what do you get?

Regular hardware store bolt's are pretty soft, unless you can get some grade 8,but when i baled i had to play their game and buy the bolts from NH! You can dent the soft bolts by turning on the flywheel when it is still plugged with hay.

Make a trip to the dealer buy dozen or enough to run you thru the season, then on a rainy day put one to the grinder and experiment a little then get a grade 5 and a grade 8 and see which one grinds like the dealer bolt.

You might check out a local farm supply, sometime they will have some.
I've just gotten into the habit of
buying a couple of packs when I buy
them.

A 5/16 is too small and 3/8 is too big. They are harder than regular bolts. Theyre sold in 10 pack anyway. If shearing more than 2-3 season there is something wrong. JD uses special shear bolts too.

Any farm supply has them. I bought 48 NOS off Ebay in New Holland bags. If you do go to the hardware store Grade 5 is what you want. DO NOT use grade 8. That would be a huge mistake. Better get some for the knotter too.

Grade 5 is the closest hardness. But they are often a different bolt than a plain old 'hardware store' bolt. Some are stepped, some are meticc. Some have a metric shaft and an American thread. Make the thirty mile trip. It will be worth your while.

Order them online. They are available from TISCO and other outlets. If you are breaking a lot of them, check and see if the flywheel bushing is worn. Stick a new bolt in the flywheel and see if it wiggles at all. If it does, the bushing is worn and needs replacement.

My experiance was with a NH 66 baler that may have had a different sized shear bolt but they were just standard 3/8" bolts in standard grade and when we had the baler never had heard of different grades so just what the hardware had on shelf that would have been grade 2 by todays standards. If I remember correctly the IHC 46 that followed used same bolts.
