JD 953 running gear

I got a JD 953 running gear and need to replace the tires on it. Manual says 6.00x16 tire but what would that be modern size? Gonna use it for Hay rides, parades, and such.

I have rebuilt several running gears in my parade wagon hobby. Three of those gears have been JD 953. Although the Operator's Manual I have for the JD 953 shows 2 alternative wheel sizes - 4.00x16 (4" wide) and 5.50x16 (5.5" wide) - my gears had 15" wheels that were 6" wide. With 15" wheels I used 205/75/15 tires. The attached chart shows the tire size recommendations for various wheel widths. I found that skinny tires for 4" or 5.5" wheels are very expensive. It was more cost effective for me to buy used 6"x15" wheels and have them sandblasted rather than buy new skinny tires to fit the narrow wheels. I have wrestled with your same issue in rebuilding running gears and the answers have always been more involved than I anticipated. Good question. A photo of my last parade wagon with a JD 953 gear and new tires is attached.

Tire Sizes

thanks. Cool wagon. I can tell you put a LOT of money and time into that. Does that one have the brake setup? Mine doesn't but i like the low deck height.

No brakes. You only need a brake system on a wagon if it is pulled by horses. If you pull your wagon with a tractor or a vehicle, you do not need wagon brakes.

I have built 11 different parade wagons and take a year to build one. It could go much faster but then it would become a job rather than a hobby. I start with buying a running gear normally in the spring. Then, during the warm months I rebuild the gear - straighten things that are bent, weld things that need it, replace all bolts, replace bearings/races/grease seals, wire wheel the gear to remove loose rust, sandblast wheels, paint the gear and wheels, and put on new tires. Then it's October and the gear goes in my garage. During the winter I actually build the wagon with all new wood and paint the wood parts. The wagon is always done in the late spring and I pull it in our local July 4 parade. Then I advertise it and sell it. I've sold all 11 wagons and now I'm done. I am getting older and the work is more than I want to do. I'm sure this is more information than you wanted but it's been a fun hobby.

not to much info. This is my second one actually. First one I built a simple deck with removable sides on in April when i was unemployed because of coronavirus. Want to sell that one but will keep the 953.
