John Deere 290 planter

There is no plate spicificly for sweet corn. Sweet corn is 'varigated' in size. So pretty hard to get a 'single drop' plate. What most guys do(me included) is to get a medium to large 'round' cell corn plate. Sometimes you get a double, sometimes you get a skip. Close enough for a garden/one or two acre sweet corn plot.If you simply must have that 'perfect' stand,You will need to spend many thousands of dollars on a vacume or finger pickup planter.New plates are available from Lincoln Ag products. Evergreen,Colorado.303-658-0281. They cost $35.00 each. I know because I bought some last year.

You can get them from Lincoln Ag Products , can't remember where the out of, Maybe Nebraska! Ask your seed dealer, he might know!

First go to John Deere parts book for planter plates and get the sizes of different plates, round seed as all sweet corn seed will be round. Then with that info measure your sweet corn seed to get the size of it and then compair your seed size to the plate sizes. Depending on jow many varieties of seed you might need several different plates and next year might need different size olates as seed might not be same size year after year. Once you find the Deere cast plate size you can start to look by part number that will be on the plate. But with the measurements you can then checl Lincoln Ag plate for size to go with them if you can find used or get new plates from them. Too big a kernel will crack up and ruin seed the same as too small a kernel will do by trying to put 2 seeds in one cell. Lucky you have a Deere as that planter is all plates for the seed you want would be avaible. Sometimes a soybean plate would work to plant 2 or 3 sweet corn kernels in one cell and one hill.
