Round baler

I'm looking for the different models of round balers in the 4x4 size. We already have a 6x5 for when we feed cattle at home. The for sale hay works better in the 4x4 size. The money is the same and they have a lot less hay in them also the market wants the smaller bale for being able to push it by hand easier.
We have an older 484 NI baler that will cost as much to fix as it is worth about. So looking for a newer baler would like to avoid as much of the fancy stuff as I can.
I need model numbers to look for and which brand they go with. Not sure just what I want to pay for one. Condition may dictate price some.

You don't have to get a 4x4 baler, many of the belt balers can be adjusted for bale dia.
My NH BR7070can be set to make a bale from 42" dia to 6'
I'd look at some 4x5 balers, more choices.

Destroked So the bale will be the same tightness as the 4x4 baler is only not full? That could be a possibility if that is so. Don't want the 5 foot wide bales. In MI they can not be loaded on a truck side by side Legally, and hauled down the road. It is considered a divisible load, and can only be loaded single on a truck. The reason for the 4 foot bale. Also no reason to give hay away when I get the same money for a 4x4 as I can for a larger bale .

I like the 4 ft wide bales for the same reason, easier to transport and works better for my smaller tractors when feeding cows. My current 4x6 baler replaced a 4x5 baler, had a old Hesston years ago that made 4x5 1/2 bales and wanted to make that size bale again to feed 5 bales per feeding rather than 6, but I'd also started selling a few bales and no one wanted to pay extra for the 6" larger bale, reset the baler and now make 4x5 bales with my 4x6 baler.
New balers 90's and up with hydraulic tension can be set to make tight bales no matter what size dia it is

I agree. My son has a 4x5 Gehl. Works
great. But They quit the baler business.
No support. Will get a John Deere next,
but don't know what model to get. We will
get a net wrap also. Takes to long to tie
with string. Also net wrap looks better in
January when selling them. But Net wrap is
a bth feeding them. The Gehl does have a
air over hyd accumulator. So will make a
tight 4x4 bale. But we make the bales as
big as it will. Just a little over 5 ft.
Want grass hay to weigh 750 to 800.

I had a brand new Deere 335 and did thousands of bales with it and had almost no repairs. We did replace all the pickup teeth 3 times (We baled lots of corn stalks) and the drive chains once. Replaced belts right before we sold it. Never put a single bearing in it. The 446 would be the same baler only newer. The reason we sold the Deere was we wanted net wrap, crop cutter and extra wide pickup which Deere did not offer in a 4x4. We replaced it with a Welger RP200. They are a German made baler and my brother inlaw was a dealer for them.If I could have had net and extra wide pickup I would prefer the Deere. Tom

JD has offered wide pickup & net wrap on a 4 ft wide rd baler for over 20 yrs. My 1st JD 467(wide pickup but twine only) that I purchased new had 30,000 bales on it when I traded it to get net wrap for present 467 which now has 26,000+ bales. 467 & other JD rd balers can wrap any size from 36'' to 72'' in diameter bale.

"So the bale will be the same tightness as the 4x4 baler is only not full?"

I can't speak for other brands, but on the Gehl, yes, they're the same density at any diameter. On the 1475 and 24 whatever that next model number was, just press the button on the monitor in the cab to change the diameter. It'll finish and put the twine or net on at whatever size you want it.

Thanks I was looking for models to look at. When I look at them on different places online, they either don't know what they have or have a lot of miss prints.

I think bale density on variable chamber balers will be relatively the same no matter what diameter the bale is while on fixed chamber baler the larger diameter the bale the tighter the bale will be.

A little tough to answer since you did not specify a budget but I kinda agree with others advising to look at 4x5 balers that can bale anything from 3 to 5 foot diameter. Maybe you will discover 4x3's are even more profitable than 4x4's who knows? If I recommended an old JD430 or NH644 you may call BS since you want to buy new or near new. John Deere, New Holland, Vermeer are all solid balers. You probably already knew that. I would say if you are focused on a 4x4 fixed, my neighbor has a Krone Bellima which is a simple chain baler and he has had good luck with it.

We have a Vermeer 504m classic. We can set the bale size up to 5?. Been a good baler. Can get most options like net wrap auto tie etc. we run ours with a 175 Massey. Works pretty good but if it?s really hilly the tractor works pretty hard.

A New Holland 630 is a nice small 4x4 baler. Had one for a couple years, twine only no fancy electronics.Only down side was sometimes hard to get a bale started. Can run with 40 HP if that matters. I used 60 HP.

Now have a NH 648 as do two neighbors. The 648 can be twine only or twine and net. Can make up to a 4x5 bale. Does require 60 HP and 1800 psi hydraulics on tractor.(one neighbor found out the hard way).

By the way, I like the 4x4 bales for the same reasons as you. HTH.

I run a 630 now. NH still made a newer version into the 2000s. Ran it on 42 PTO HP for years. 12 volt and one remote needed. Only issue starting bales for me is really short hay that is way too dry. Long hay and heavy windows it it start a bale easily as fast as you can cram it through the pickup.

I have a New Holland 634 that I bought at auction from a friends estate sale. He always took very good care of his equipment. Used it for 2 years now. Very good baler with electric tie and bale kicker. Makes a very good 4x4 bale. It is a 1996 model.
