Rusty wheel

Question. Is the distance from the center line of the tractor to the inside of the rear tire the same on a three bottom plow as it Is on a two bottom. I have a 412 two bottom for a 40-w John Deere, and an 812 for a John Deere 530. Thank you much for your input.

Well maybe. Yes assuming a mounted 3pt hitch plow. A plow from the same manufacturer, and with the same mold board width will probably be the same. For instance if a Oliver 2-16 plow is replaced with an Oliver 3-16 plow of similar vintage, the adjustment will probably be fine. Jim

For what it's worth, 59 years ago as part of his basic Ag Engineering course at UW Madison ,Pfo Floyd Duffee, explained to us students, that the center of pull of a moldboard is 1/3d from the point, so for a 3-16 it's 26 2/3" from the sidewall andfor a 2-16 it,s 8" less.

It does not make the problems some let on it does. With a 2-12" plow that was normal around here you cannot set wheel tread in far enough to go by that formula as if you could the tractor the wheel tread would be too narrow it would fall over. Now think most row crop tractors getting down to under a 60" tread was hard to do. Not think about the Farmall F20 wide tread that had about a 80" tread for being thw width to cultivate 2 40" corn rows. Now if on the dmaller tractor you could not get that tread down for that formula then think how far off it would be for the F20 pulling the same 2-12" plow. On a drag type plow it would have to be a 3-14" before you could possibly set it following that formula. Using the same 66" wheel tread we pulled that 2-12" plow but for the 3-12" we used same wheel tresd. The only tractor with a less than the 60" tread was the Ford N series or the Ferguson TO series that had a 52" wheel tread for standard andfor plowing no mater what size plow. But that 52" tread as low as they set were not going to roll sideways like the high row crop witt a very narrow wheel tread. The only plow I had that could be set with that forula was a 4-14" semi mounted.. Then only set the right wheel acording to the foruls., the left was kept at 60".

I am pulling a 3 x14 inch plow here with the wheels set at 30 inch centers and it?s a little bit to narrow I had to change the right hand sway block to let the plow move to the left enough to make a full cut and fill the furrow all the way . This picture is before the sway Block change

This picture is after I changed the sway block so the plow could take a full cut

You really shouldn't use sway blocks on mounted plows. You adjust them to run centered with nothing forcing them

I like to have them set in category one position that way it still helps control the plow but I can plow around the edges of the field

Or on the contour like I did here

And your right I really need to widen the wheels a bit but it?s set up about right to work with my sickle mower the way it is
