Hydraulic cylinder restrictor

I have what I would call a 'standard" farm hydraulic cylinder on my square baler. The baler has a belt thrower and the cylinder moves the chute directionally left and right. I am concerned the cylinder might bend or break the mounts on the baler or the chute itself. I could spend money I dont have and buy a little cylinder from the farm store... or Is there any 'cheap" fix to reduce the force of a hydraulic cylinder.?

I think you're saying the stroke of the cylinder is greater than the range of the thrower. I don't understand the part of reducing the force of the cylinder. You don't really want the cylinder ( on any implement) to run up against the stop and not break it just because it ran out of power. You want to run out of stroke before (or just as) it contacts the stop. Easiest way to do this is clip-on depth stops, available at any farm store.

I'm gathering from your description that the chute aiming cylinder is a special, short unit. If, when the cylinder is fully extended, there is danger of the baler being damaged, the extension stroke will have to be limited (this can be accomplished by disassembling the cylinder and putting the required thickness of depth stops INSIDE,between the piston and the cylinder head, providing the depth stops are smaller in diameter than the piston) or the mounting point of the cylinder relocated so at full extension the baler will not be damaged, and the retraction stroke limited with the appropriate depth stops on the rod between the cylinder head and the clevis.

A 'smaller' diameter ylinder will move faster due the fact it takes less oil to move it. To slow down you need a larger diameter

Ditto on smaller cylinder will operate faster than larger diameter cyl.

You could install washer with a small orifice between male coupler & hose on 1 or both hoses to slow cyl rod travel speed.

Restrictors won't reduce the force, only slow the cylinder down.

The only thing that will reduce the force is a reduction in hydraulic pressure.

Even a 2" cylinder is enough to bend things if you're using a tractor made any time in the last 40 years.

Just use your brain, and everything will be fine. There is no need to turn the thrower to its extreme limits.

a reduction in force can be done with a cross over relief valve as used in snow plow swing cylinders[/img]
