Mecum Auction/ Davenport Iowa This Week

Hello, Is anyone watching the auctions this week? It is asham what some of the stuff is selling for.....Like a restored JD big 4 Mower for 263.00 dollars.......What going to happen to the hobby of collecting????

Maybe an opportunity for new folks to get involved in the hobby?

Restoring anything for profit has always been a fantasy more often than not.

Interest is going elsewhere just like the interest in 60's and 70's muscle cars and numerous other things. My friend is a muscle car enthusiast and he is always talking about cars that used to bring 15-20K now going for 10K or less. Farm implements have never had the interest that tractors have had and that is unfortunate. I like a fixed up implement just as much as a tractor and it is more of a treat to see one versus the 1,000th Farmall, JD, or Ford tractor that you have seen at a show. Anyways, maybe the younger generation will take an interest in horse drawn and early tractor implements but I am not holding my breath on that.

A lot of people collect things that were popular in their youth. As each generation passes, the older collectibles loose their value because the next generation collects newer stuff.

Anybody that pays more then $200 for a JD No 4 mower is a fool restored or not. That was a popular mower for JD and overall. They shouldn?t be hard to find. I?ve seen lots of them over the years. My neighbor even had one that came from the factory with rubber. I have an Oliver horse drawn mower. Try finding one of those at every antique auction.

Just not the right type of auction. Need in person auctions for something like that. Amish do not have computors to see something like that. And in some Amishareas that mower would habe brought over a thousand dollars plus for use. depending on model of mower could be up to $1,500+.

(quoted from post at 20:08:32 11/07/19) A lot of people collect things that were popular in their youth. As each generation passes, the older collectibles loose their value because the next generation collects newer stuff.

That pretty much says it all.

I too would like to see more implements and equipment fixed up. No sense having tractors if you don't have anything to pull with them!
