New ideal sickle mower

I am going to look at a new ideal trailer sickle mower. The guy said it wont raise when u pull the rope. Need a new pit man arm. He was mowing with it last year. How hard would it be to fix the problem with the lift. I used one when i was younger on back of dads ca. It pto driven. What would be a good price to offer on this mower. Dont know what model this is. Thank Donald

drop the l on ideal, IDEA not Ideal. And probably a No. 30 mower. And been years ago I parted out some so don't remember what all is in that gearbox. Could be something simple but could also be a completely shot box.

The typical reason for a "power lift" not to work is that they get gummed up inside with dirt and old hardened grease.

You might get it to work by squirting a little diesel fuel inside the mechanism and repeating this over a few days.

What are you intending to pull it with, I ASSUME the tractor doesn't have "remote hydraulics", that's the only way I'd ever consider buying a "power lift" mower to actually use, just a MISERABLE system, all around.

There is a flat spring in the lifting mechanism. I worked for an Allis Chalmers dealer that was a New Idea dealer. A customer reported that the mechanical lift stopped working. The parts man was so confident that the problem was a flat spring, so that is all he sent out with me. It was extremely easy to fix, but this was over 50 years ago and the mower was old at that time. The spring may be NLA now. New Idea of Coldwater, Ohio built the best corn pickers and manure spreaders. Other equipment was good but other companies made other equipment about as good, but New Idea pickers and spreaders were the best available. There was a McCormick horse drawn mower called the new IDEAL. Sometimes there was some confusion. Again I say that spring may be NLA

PS Looking back, at that time Allis Chalmers had a square baler that was not the greatest, so this dealer sold New Holland, They did not have a good manure spreader or picker, so we sold New Idea. I do not know it Allis Chalmers made a feed grinder, but we sold Gehl. I never knew a dealer who had so many short lines.

I live about 35 mile from that abonded factory that the EPA will not allow anything to be done with because there JUST MIGHT be paint gotten thru the 12" concrete floor. Wanted to turn it into a museium but EPA will not allow it.

That will not fix the broken parts inside, junked 2 because of that problem, thought I could make one gearbox out of two but no go.

In addition to the gummed up gearbox and the spring mentioned previously, there is a "dog" in the lift box that might be worn out. I remember replacing the dog, and then it worked perfectly. It was available in 1965, and remarkably inexpensive but that was 55 years ago. Can you still get parts for it? If no parts are available, I would think scrap price.
