JD 246 planter

I have found a sound JD 246 planter. Is it capable of planting corn, soybeans, millet, and sunflowers? Are parts still available? This one is on a 3 pt hitch and has always been barn stored, and any idea of the weight?

They are not a heavy planter, If seed and fertilizer are filled that is probably about same weight as planter. Used ours behind a 2N Ford. Dad bought it new and we used it untill I got a 4 row planter. Always planted corn and soybeans with ours. I know what sunflowers are but never seen the seed. I have no idea what millet is. If you can find the plate book on the Deere parts lokup site if they ever made a plate for those crops it will tell you what one to use in number of cells and size of cells. Was way over a hundred different plates avaible.

When u got it all ready to plant, and before you put the seed in the box, turn the wheel that drives the seed plate, and look in there and see how fast the plate turns, that will give u a incentive to keep the speed down!

I use a 247 to plant sunflowers, same planter. New plates are available but have to be modified. Several threads on here by me and others on the planter and plates.

I am only food plotting so its no big deal. Will this planter do no till, or is minimum till required?

Full till required, not even minimum till and no till would not even make a mark in the ground. When they were made minimum till was not thought of let alone no till And did as good a planting as any other planter on the market. Remember they were made back in 1953.

Owen, you will not find a 3 point planter that will do no till as none were ever made. Some have taken a 7000 Deere planter and made into a 2 row no till planter but don't think they ever made it as a 3 point version as that was done for pulling with horses.
