nh 849 round baler

I'm not sure about an 849, but I know on the 847 the apron chain is adjustable. There are adjustment bolts at the top on each side on that model. If I remember correctly they work the opposite way to what you would expect. You can get a re print manual direct from New Holland in paper or PDF and they are not expensive.
 
There is a little adjustment at the top of the bale chamber with bolts that are on the arms for the apron chain I just can?t remember what way you turn them

Yes, that's correct. Big bolt up top on each side with a lock nut. I think you back them out to add tension to the chain. I know my chain was really slack, and I thought I'd have to take a link out, but it adjusted up fine with those bolts. I'd assume the 849 is similar to the 847.
 
That will only take up the slack when the baler is empty,when you start to make a bale you're back to where you started.Taking a link out will help with overall bale tightness and
take the slack out.
