IH McCormick grain drill

i have recently purchase an IH McCormick drill. It has no end wheels and is driven by the rear packer wheels. It has 8 drops and appears to be a 6" spacing. I have searched and searched and can t find a photo of anything like it. It is an older unit with a single manual lift and a chain on one end that drives it, it also has a lever that seems to disengage the seed drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated

wow, had no idea it would be that old. That might explain the reason the tongue has had some welding done to it. Can t find any kind of model number, any idea what it might be or where I could possibly find out?

Upon further research, it turns out that the drill you describe was designed to be pulled behind a plow. There was a gang of packer wheels as wide as the drill, in front of it, to which the drill was attached. You got a real rare piece there! I would try to find (or build ) a single row packer as wide as the drill and as long as it looked period correct I think it would look great. Odds of finding the original packer would be pretty bleak, as it was a special tool built for a special area, and it was only built in '48. You were lucky to find what you did.

One horse could not pull that. Where did you get your "information"? The entry mentioning a drill that is made to pull behind a mold board plow is correct. I remember riding with my Dad as he plowed with a 3-14 plow and had a John Deere Pony Drill and packer hitched directly behind the plow. The drill and packer were 42 inches wide to exactly match the plow.

The original poster has a REAL GEM there.

That identical set-up that you describe was exhibited at the 2014 Red Power Roundup in Huron, South Dakota behind a Farmall H tractor as I recall. It was very nicely restored and included the tractor, plow, planter, etc. As you can imagine there was lots of interest. My memory is short but it seems they loaded it for transport hooked all together. I thought there was a picture of that set-up in our computer but I cannot find it.

well I sure appreciate all the info from everyone, it s been a big help. I m trying to figure out how to post a few pics of it, I still have not been able to put my eyes on a photo yet anywhere.

I found a photo of a John Deere 60 tractor, 3 bottom plow, packer and pony drill in a JD book. It's in black and white and photoing it gives a somewhat dark photo. I'll try to post it later to see if it's usable.

Will try the photo. It's quite dark so detail is harder to pick out.

Don't know any other info about the picture.

Further info - the Parts Catalog shows the PD and PD-L drills manufactured from 1940 through 1959 depending on size and model. They were available in 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 rows, all 6 inch spacing.
