John Deere 1600 Haybine flotation spring disassembly

Hi guys, I have a broken inner spring on my 1600 haybine. I have removed the spring no problem. Deere parts has told me the 4 pieces (inner, outer, end cap, and bolt) are all seperate parts. Just the inner spring is broken. it is loose and begins to thread out but jams on the end of the other spring. Looks like i need to thread the end cap out of the outer spring, and then replace the inner spring, but i cannot for the life of me get it to budge.

Was told by an old timer that i need to put tension back onto the spring in order to thread out the end piece. Just wondering if anyone knows of the specific tool or another method of how to do this.

Clamp the middle of the spring in a vise (which you've already done), then, at end with casting, catch just the outer end of the spring "wire" with a large pipewrench and rotate it clockwise. this will expand the spring, and while holding the spring wound in that direction, the cast iron insert will easily unscrew.

HARDER to explain, than to actually "do", once you have figured it out.

It's easy to put the insert back in, as turning the insert in that direction automatically "opens" the spring coils.

WOW!!!!! Worked like a charm.. the weight of the 36 inch pipe wrench basically gave enough torque on the spring.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar! There was a very large amount of cursing, sweat and anger this morning attempting to take that off. I am just glad we didn't resort to more aggressive tactics before turning to this forum.

Thanks so much. I can now replace my inner spring.

Ha ha, like I said, once you figure it out it's "silly simple/easy"!
