Swathing for Combine with IH 990

I've got an IH 82 combine that has a windrow/swath pickup "dummy" head. My question is if I could swath small grains (oats) for the combine using my 7 foot IH 990 mower
conditioner?

The conditioning rolls on a 990 separate when you raise the cutter head, so I'm thinking that perhaps the rolls could be blocked so that they would stay apart when the cutter
head is lowered, which could allow the oats to go through without getting the full conditioning.

I know the true swathing machines don't have conditioners but just cut and lay the crop on the ground to dry. I don't really want the expense of a swather for the small amount
of small grains that I do, hence the question on using the 990. The normal cutting width of the 82 combine is about the same as the 990, so the volume per swath would be
comparable to what the combine would normally cut. Thanks for the help.

Cousin blocked his rolls apart and cut only when there was dew on the grain and at night to keep from shelling badly. Worked ok for him on 70 or so acres.

Yes you can with a 990. You will need to make some sort of block to keep the rolls apart when lowered. Dad would sometimes cut oats for hay when in head but not quite dry enough to combine and he would do something to the rolls on his 990. Cut early in the morning when they are tough. I think my son was at your place building some fence. He hauls the amish crew. He remarked about how nice of a combine you had setting there. Tom

Here at the farm as in a couple of days ago? Small world! Yup, got a good deal on the 82. It still has the cutter head on it but have had enough issues with weeds that I got a pi lip head last summer.

I use a 479 nh with the rubber nearly gone on one roll, plus the rolls blocked open. Like others have said, run when the dew is on, plus I try to keep the rpm below full 540. Has worked good for me for many years. combine with an F 3 gleaner.
