Baler recommendations

I'm looking into getting a small round
baler. I only have a moline U ford 600
and wd45 to work with. Thinking the 45
would be the machine though it will
require some hydraulic modification. What
would be the best option for a baler that
can be run by a 50 hp tractor? Thanks.

Honestly, there are lots and lots of 4x4 balers that can be run by 50hp tractors. Even a handful of 3x4 out there, but I wouldn't set out looking for one. I'd just suggesting an open throat baler vs an old closed throat baler. Fixed chamber vs variable is a matter of opinion. You'll get more hay in a variable, but a lot of people love fixed chamber bales. I've done both and prefer a variable, but they'll both roll hay.

We have a 4x5 Gehl. You can make 4x4 easily. In fact 4.5 is where they like. But they don't make Gehl balers anymore, Company is still in business. Most everything is generic anyway. And they are cheap. Would just need a 2 way valve for wd45. Easy to hook up.

I pulled a Gehl 1450 4x5 with my 53 horse Oliver 1550 with no problems. They were pretty much the equivalent of an Oliver 770.

A New Idea 483 which were also sold as a CaseIH, the smaller Hesstons, or a Deere 330-335. We had a new Deere 335 and dad sometimes pulled it with his 2040 which is about 40 hp. Baled thousands of bales of hay and corn stalks and only ever had one breakdown for a broken spring. We replaced the drive chains twice and rebuilt the pickup three times as corn stalks are hard on them. Only reason I sold it was I wanted net wrap and a mega wide pickup. Tom

Neighbor had a small Hesston baler that made those little 4 X 4 bales your WD45 should pull one no problem.Only thing is with a bale that small you won't get move good before
you have to tie the bale.

Your biggest limiting factor is hydraulic capacity. I can run my old Vermeer 605 with my Ford 3000, but the lift gate cylinders are too big for the old Ford to operate. Most smaller 4x4 baler cylinders aren't so big, but just something to think about.

I ran an M&W 1500 round baler(4X5 bales) for years with a 47 hp JD 3010, no problem. So a good WD-45 with 53 PTO hp and its snappy governor should work fine on an M&W or a Krone.
