Un-scrapping a Hesston PT1070 Haybine.

Got this for scrap price.

Just need to solve the reel drive problem. I normally wouldn't do something like this, but I already have a PT1070 that I solved this very same problem on. Just had to get out the torch at sunrise this morning to dismantle what looks like two failed previous repairs by the previous owner.

Now, I need a PTO yoke with a 1-1/2" round center and some tubing.

I can see that it will be no band-aid repair! My neighbors had one of those many years ago, and I remember that the reel drive was problematic. Everything that they had suffered from grease worms.

It's going to be a little more hairy than the operation that I did on the other one.

On the first one, I did a temporary fix with U-bolts and a PTO yoke, but the temporary fix didn't ruin the end of the tube. So when I went to do the final fix, I still had all of the original tube, minus a small window that I had torched in it.z

On this one, the end of the tube got absolutely ruined when the previous owner's fix failed. I'm going to have to figure out how to splice a new piece on (hence the "V" shaped cut. Joining two tubes with one straight weld is a recipe for disaster. The V joint should spread the stress.

Looky what my friend with a lathe and mill did.

The large tube was a piece of 4" OD , 3.5"ID. tubing that I bought. He turned about 100 thousands off of the entire length of it, so it will fit inside the tube in the machine to align, splice and repair.

He also turned a new drive hub that we put on the shaft (along with the one installed by the previous owner) to fit inside snug.

The end of the shaft and sprocket drive hub were mangled. So I built up the shaft with weld before I gave it to him. He turned it back down and cut a new keyway channel.

He also cut a new keyway channel in the drive hub, on the side that still has all of its meat, since the previous owner broke some of the hub thickness off the other side.

Now to splicing, aligning and welding!

Nice! I did basically the same thing to make a new widespread on an IHC spreader.

That looks too good to put on that old Heston. I think that you should use it as an ash tray stand and leave it in your living room, even if nobody smokes any more. Where abouts are you? I am going to be in Albany in a week or two.
