Play in flywheel

271 NH baler has a small amount of travel (forward/back). Wondering if it can be tightened with nut in the center or if the gearbox has to be opened up, or if a little play is not a problem

Thanks, Warren

If the shear bolt is in place and tight there shouldn't be any play at all. Take the shear bolt out and see if the flywheel is moving around much at all and if the shear bolt mount is loose at all. If the flywheel moves around much, especially if you can rock it by holding the outside edge and wobbling it like you'd check a tire for a loose bearing, the flywheel bushing is worn and needed replacing. Not a horrible job, but a heavy one. If the shear bolt mount, I don't know the NH name for it moves, you can try tightening the big nut on the shaft. If that doesn't do it then it's probably worn in the splines and needs replacement. If these 2 items aren't tight and in good shape you will go through a lot of shear bolts.

Thanks Bret, Shear bolt was looser than I thought, had someone wobble the flywheel while I watched and the bolt was a little loose, I thought the center nut would need tightening but I was wondering what/how it was attached. Looked through my manual but didn't find answers. Do you know if the bushing is pressed into the flywheel? Or if there is a fork spec for that nut?

Yes, flywheel bushing is pressed/driven in. No clue on torque for the nut, but "really, REALLY" tight is probably as close as you'll come!

So there splines on the shaft and the bushing?

Is there a manual that describes it? Can't find any thing in the owners manual?

The shear bolt mount, the part with the nut, has splines IRIC. The flywheel bushing runs free, only the shearbolt provides a mechanical joining of the two. It won't be in the manual, but the parts diagrams at Messicks show it pretty good.

Thanks Bret,

Local NH dealer had one on hand but for someone else. So break out the cherry picker!

Tks Warren
