pros and cons if you used one thanks

3 point rake?Dont like em.In my experiences,3 point rakes are more troublesome than a pull type. Mostly because of the drive. U joints, belts? seen to cause most of the issues.I have found that if you rake the field first in a left turn pattern, leaving ends till last gets you a clean job without leaving a mess to clean up.I have found most folks rake the ends first, then the field and try to stay away from the previously raked end. Doesn't work. You have to go back and clean up the mess(rerake it),or leave it.An 'old' pull type properly used will leave a clean field with no messy/raggy ends.

I have a John Deere 350 3 pt rake and it has been a very good hay rake. Kind of crowds the rear wheels on my tractors, so it tight when hooking up, but does a nice job of gleaning the field, nimble and I can lift it over windrows.

Having said that, I've got a New Holland 56 rake with a dolly wheel and it has been a very good rake too. You got to plan your raking a little better so as not to have hay curley-qued around at the ends. What I like most about the New Holland is you just back up to it, hook-up the drawbar and you're raking hay.

I've been toying with the idea of a rotary rake, but honestly, time is a premium and the older I get, the more I just like draw bar hitches - and with the New Holland, a bonus - no PTO to deal with.

YMMV...

The 3 point pto drive rake is better when you have lots of big, heavy windrows. Depending on the soil the big, heavy windrows will stop the drive tires from turning on our NH56. Making turns with a 3 point rake it swings out so you have to take the corners different than a drag type, but once you get it figured out it's no big deal. Remember a poor operator always blames his equipment.
