Steel Wheel/Skein Grease?

Hello,
Does anyone know what would be the best grease to put on an old farm wagon with steel wheels? My father tells me that 70 years ago when he was a kid he can remember a couple times a year they would have to remove the wheels and apply a thick coat of grease on the skeins from a big bucket. He recalls it being pretty thick stuff. Even back then he tells me the wheels had quite a bit of play and did not fit all that tight on the skeins. I was told to be careful because in the summer the grease will run out and make a mess of things. This wagon will see minimal use but I may use it to haul pumpkins around from time to time. Any suggestions?

I drilled and tapped mine and put grease zerks in them. Easy way to grease and will get done more often.

Is it called Red & tacky? I got that at auto parts store and what I would use now but used to just use gun grease. The orignal was a fibered sticky grease.
