Gehl hammer mill screen

I need to change to a smaller screen in my Gehl MX65 grinder mixer (model 55 mill.) Does anyone know of a company that makes replacement screens? Other idea I'm thinking about is buying a piece of perforated steel plate and having it rolled at a local metal fab shop that has a big 3-roll roller. I think they could match the radius of my old screen, only problem would be that the edges of the screen would have partial holes instead of a smooth edge. Think that would matter?

The mill has a 1 1/2" screen in it now, and I've been using it for grinding ear corn for feeding steers. Had a lot of trouble last winter with the feed bridging in the mixer tank, lots of problems unloading. Seems like I'm getting a lot more husks that aren't getting cut up, and bigger chunks of cob than I had before. The corn had been picked a few months before, so it might have been higher moisture than previous crop, but it seemed plenty dry when picked and cribbed. Used a different picker that did a cleaner job with less husks, so I was surprised to have so much trouble. The edges of the holes in the screen look rounded, and the hammer corners are rounded too, so that may be part of the problem. Still have 3 good corners on the hammers, so I'll rotate them too.

I'm thinking that 3/4" would be a better screen size to use than the 1 1/2". When I ground ear corn from previous years, I have always had problems with the feed not wanting to flow out of the steer stuffer, I think due to the strands of husks in the feed. I always have to check it every day to bang on the doors and pull feed down, and open it every few days to knock down the bridging. A lot of cob chunks in the pan too that the steers pick out. Some of the cob chucks are up to an inch long. I run the mill with a Farmall M, wide open throttle.

Do you need to turn the hammers in your mill? I've helped guys do that in the past and it really helped.

There is a place that makes screens, someone will know where it is.....

3/4 is going to be a big step down, you might want to research and be at an inch maybe for ear corn? You will be looking at a big hp/time change if you go from 1.5 to 3/4 as well.....

Just talked to a Gehl dealer. Can still get new screens for the MX65, except they're $195 each. But, I would have been happy to pay that back in January when I had the mixer tank full of feed and nothing was coming out of the unload auger. Kept having to shut down, climb up ladder and poke around with a rake handle, start up again...

I've ground ear corn with an H on the mill and it worked fine too, so the M shouldn't have a problem for HP if I go finer.

The corner on the hammers have a pretty good radius. The other 3 corners on them look new, so I'll definitely flip them around, which should help cut up the husks. Thinking I might also paint the inside of the tank with graphite paint too.

call me at link_disallowed days and i can tell you where to get the screens ask for larry or call 528-2431 at nite 6-9 cst

Think it was inch holes we used but way too many years have passed. But those partial holes are normal.

I ground a lot of ear corn with a gehl 50 and then 55 and a IHC 300.

Its surprising how much difference a different size screen makes. Could sure pull the 300 down in a hurry in fall with the higher moisture ear corn.

I've had bridging too, especially in high moisture ear corn right after picking it back in the wet 90s. I had a long thin stick, left it unload and poked in like you, it didn't seem terribly risky to let it run while poking with reasonable care, once you got a hole and stuff curculating it would often take off again on its own.

No one said where to get the screens. I know it’s an old post, but I need some screens too. Used ones or new aftermarket ones. I too don’t want to pay the $200 price for a new one from dealer.

Someone may have one but if you plan to use it much $200 isn't a bad price to have the correct size screen.
I have a Gehl 95 I grind ear corn with, can't remember if it has a 3/4 or 1" screen.
