John Deere 493A planter

I’m looking at restoring my grandfather’s 493A planter. It’s a type P2100 and I have the serial number too, if that helps. It’s in good shape overall, but I’m sure some of the more delicate parts and things that have been sitting on the ground will need replacing. JD has some of the parts but I’ve not found the usual part sources like Shoup to not be of much help. Anybody know of other sources? I’m not going to start unless I’m pretty sure I can get it to “usable”. Thanks.
 
First what do you actually have? The planters were 494A, not 493A unless it is a western version in a speciliesed condition that I have never heard of. I still have a 450 planter and grew up with a 246 planter. I just sent my 494A along with 3 494 and 4 290 and 2 490 planters to scrap. So is the 493A correct or not? Then what parts do you need> And shoup has never carried anything for them as they only do newer machinery. All newer than I anything I ever had. Still have some parts.

It’s definitely a 493A and the John Deere parts site agrees that they made such. It’s a cotton planter, so I figure most folks from up north won’t have run across them. I’m not sure what I need, as I haven’t torn into it yet. I redid an old disc a few years ago and found everything I needed. I was trying to check to see if most things were available before I got too far into the process. [/url]

I’m curious as to whether it might be basically the same as your 494? As you can see, it hasn’t moved lately.
 
Leroy, I hope those planters were junk as some bring good money and I'd like to have a 290. I am still interested in some of your other equipment when this cold spell passes will try to get in touch with you. Rick

There was also a 495 planter. I had one. It had some features that a 494 did not have, but I think those features could have been installed on a 494.
 
Rick, the only ones that were possible usuable were the 494 & 494A. I had wanted to make 3 of the 290 planters out of the 4 for resale but health got in the way. The 2 490 hoped to make one out of the 2. And hope ths cold does not stay around. Cannot take it. And if he has not yet moved them on they are at New Hampshire. He still has a bunch of items to pick up.
 
I will have to hunt up that parts book as I think the only difference will be in the seed boxes with being like the Deere 246 that was corn and 247 that was combination corn-cotton. These were 2 row 3 point hitch planters.
 
The 494-494A the seed just droped from plate down. The 495 and 495A had a chain to take the seed down thinking the seed would not bounce around and get an evener stand. Very few of them and likely was a lot higher priced unit when new but cheaper used because of problems with that chain drop of seed.

Not sure how any of these will compare to my 493A. I guess I’ll just get it out of the trees and see what I need. It was working fine about 5 or so years ago, so it may not need much. I think it’s a really positive sign that both tires are still holding air!
 
I just looked at the online parts book and only thing I can see different is the seed boxes and possibly how they mount. All the frame is same as for the 494A. Older units had a tramsmission type of gear box, newer had all open gears. I did not like them and converted to the gearbox. A couple of attachments I don't remember being in the 494A book but I was not looking for them either. If you do have the double disk seed openers you do need the covering disks, I did not have them on and had covering problems after I changed from runners to the disk opener. I have the disk covering attachment but need bearings. I also have the attachment to convert to a 6 row planter but never put it on.
 
Thanks for doing that background work. I may go get that thing tomorrow and start tearing it down. If it can’t be fixed, then it’s not worth anything less than what it’s worth now.
One issue: the hydraulics currently don’t work. Is there a way to jack it up and pin the tires in place (down) so as to be able pull it?I didn’t think about that when I was there and I can’t tell from my pictures.
 
It takes a standard 8" stroke hydrolic cylinder for operation. For just transp[ortation on the planter or anything else they make a unit just for that purpose that is hand cranked to raise the implement. Normally the cylinder is removed to use on a different piece of machinery. It not being a dedicated cylinder as they cost way to much to leave on and have a cylinder for every piece of equipment. And then once it is raised there is a transport lock to hold it up while you take that cylinder to use on the next implement. If no cylinder or hand jack avaible you could raise it with a couple of the high lift type of jacke enough to pin that transport unit into place and then let the jacks down. Better if nothing there to go to the farm store and buy that unit to raise it manually unless you can use a tractor with the remote cylinder to go get it.
