Deere 290 Planter Row Markers

Restoring a 290 planter but I am having a hard time understanding how the row markers work. I have the disks, chains, rods and arms. My planter has the latch on it as well. I see in the manuals that I have, that at the latch there is a "washer" and "cotter pin" to be put on the chain but I am not sure where / how to put them on the chain and how they work. I am also missing the little spring at the latch and the bigger spring at the end of the chain. I figure the springs shouldn't be hard to get something to work, but the "washer" and "cotter pin" is what I'm trying to figure out.
Any help pics etc will be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has those springs I would be interested.
Thanks...
Alan

I'd guess that the washer and cotter is some kind of a 'stroke limiter'.Either 'up or down'. Do you have a book? can you put it in the 'field' and play with it?

I bought a new IH Cyclo, years ago,if too would get stuck in one position or another, the thing tat helped me, was spray some either on it, clean it up, but i had HYd, so i could check it, and go again if you got somebody there to see what it doing!

I just scraped 4 of those planters and 2 of the 4 row version the 490. I think that setup is to either lengton or tighten the chain so it pulls the right amount.

Do you have the bar that bolts to the drawbar of the tractor? The springs hook to that and to the chains so when you turn at the end of the field, that bar pulls the chain one direction or the other. I assume the cotter pin you're talking about goes in the chain at the arm that it slides through on the planter fame so it moves that arm the correct distance.

Alan, the cotter key determines which marker drops. The chain runs all the way to the hitch at the draw bar. There is an arm that the chain is attached
to at the hitch that must be tightened 90 degrees from the tounge. I will try and get some pictures of mine, and see if I can get some pictures of some
pages in the manual. My E mail is open send me your phone# and I'll send you some pictures, Mark.

Hi Mark
Thanks I have a manual and it briefly explains how it works and the I can see the cotter pin thru the chain but I can't make out where the washer is and how it stays on the chain .So a pic would be great
Thanks Alan

It's been a while, but I think all I did was wire a couple of half inch nuts to the chain on mine. You just need something to pull the lever from side to side so the chain doesn't just slide through it.
