Little Genius wheels

Hi,
First post. ))
I have a IHC Little Genius #8 I recently purchased. Its in Good shape now after straightening & replacing the nails with cotter pins. lol However, the tire sizes are mismatched. The furrow wheel is a 6.00-16 and the land side is a 6.00-15. I did some searching the past 3 days or so and concluded that it could be 15" or 16" (depending on the year), the manual I have calls for both to be 16". I figure some came with 15" because some owners are looking for 15" replacement tires. It looks to me like the OEM wheel on my set is a 15".

My question is does anyone know a source for a 15"x 6" 8 lug Implement rim that will fit?

Or, does anyone have any experience that it is ok to mount a 16" rim to match the 16" on it? Should I stay with 15"?

Kinda new to plowing with a Trailer plow ))

Located in Sullivan County PA.

Thanks Frank

Like these? I have a tail wheel too.

My #8 is on original steel. Furrow wheel is a larger diameter than the land wheel. This allows for more adjustment to ensure the plow runs level when opening the first furrow. After opening the first furrow, then adjustments should be made again so the plow runs level with the furrow wheel IN the furrow.

I did have another #8 that came on factory rubber tires. The furrow wheel on that one was a 7.50x16, and the land wheel was a 6.00x16.

Hey, did those two come off the same trailer plow? Are tghey 16" or 15"? Are they forsale?

That would give the height difference I noticed on the steel wheels.

So do you think it would be OK as is? 16 on the furrow side, 15 on the land side?

My father in law had three of those plows. One is still left here but too far gone to use, I think. Several more steel wheeled type junked in the pasture. They had a larger wheel on the land side. I used to wonder why it wasn't on the furrow side then realized it's better to drive the lift clutch. Picture of the one left, used to be a three-bottom. I'll have to check the size tomorrow.

I have never heard of a furrow wheel being bigger than the land wheel, always either same size or land wheel being bigger.. Not unusual for a rubber tired plow to come from factory with a 21" land wheel and a 16" furrow wheel. And a lot were ran with a 7:50x16 on land wheel and a 6:00x16" furrow wheel. Going bigger on the furrow wheel than the land wheel would keep you from being able to level the plow. I first starting to use that type of plow 62 years ago.

So this is definitely a debatable topic..lol Great...lol

Some say same size wheels, some say different on land or on furrow..I can see in pics that the steel wheels are different sizes too.....so I guess Just run with what I have: 15" on Land side and 16" on furrow side and see what happens ))).
Not having ever used one before I am absolutely curious/confused now ))

You'll be fine. The #8 has a lot of range in the levers. I run a 6.00-16 on the furrow wheel and a 7.60-15 snow tire on the land wheel of my #8 and it works fine. Both levers have adjustment either way when plowing. I ran it like that because, like you that's the rims it came with, and that's the tires I was able to come up with. You can swap them side to side if you can come up with appropriate tires, then you'd feel better about using the larger wheel on the land wheel.

And, for an FYI, when rubber tires became an option, IH added a second hole to the cast arm on the furrow axle. The forward hole is to be used for rubber tires, to make up for the fact that the steel land wheel was larger in diameter than the furrow wheel but both rubber tires are much closer to each other in diameter.

Your 7:60x15" tire would be about equal in height to a 6:50x16" tire or about an inch taller, just mostly wider for better ground grip. The John Deere No. 52 plow both were same size steel of 28" diameter. The 4B was a heavier plow and used the 28" on furrow wheel and a 32" wheel for land wheel to get bore lift capacity for heavier plow. My Moline plow had if I remember correctly a 16" for furrow but a 21" on land clutch wheel, but it was on rubber from factory, that gave it about same difference in diameter as the 28" to 32" on the Deere 4B plow.

As long as you used a taller 15" tire on land wheel than the 16" on furrow wheel. Probably way it was supposed to be from factory.

I measured the wheels. One is 16 x 5 1/2 and the other is 16 x 4 1/2. I checked the plow in the yard and the wider one is on the land side. Tail wheel is 12 x 3 1/2.

Thank You everyone! I will pull tires, clean & preserve rims, put new tubes in and run what I got before investing in new rubber.

The previous owner claimed it worked fine, so I am confident thanks to all your input it will flip dirt well. ))
