New Idea 214 manure spreader -ratchet wheel chipping

Hello hoping I get can some ideas on our spreader. Its a pto drive New Idea 214. Unloaded it will run fine, but even half full the dog that hits the ratchet and advances the apron chain will skip
and break off teeth on the ratchet wheel. A new dog (the pawl) is $132! before I replaced this and the spring that tensions the dog onto the ratchet wheel, is there anything else that can be
causing this? I can move the pto shaft by hand quite easily and do not feel any big resistance in the spreader when I do this.

Any help appreciated.
Best,
Paul

Hello, I'm assuming it's a single beater spreader? The 214 refers to the box size, a single beater would be a 217 and have the tag on one of the beater side panels. I just rebuilt a 217 about a year ago and know that the operator's manual had some adjustments to do for the feed pawls and the throwout clutch. Have you tried any of these adjustments? If you don't have a manual, you can view the complete operator's and parts manual pages on the AGCO parts catalog site. Have you used the AGCO site before?

HI, thanks for the reply. I guess we have a 215, its got the main beater and 2 spike beaters, for 3 total. I checked the adjustments you metnioned and they seem fine.
Others have told me to check the bearings on the apron, and they do appear to be loose. The theory is that if they are loose, teh ratchet wheel will move and cause chipping.
My other thought was to replace the dog and dog spring. The dog is pretty pricey at $138.
