putting a new fuel sending unit and gauge on massey 135. gauge is pegging full with sending unit attatched or not.should gauge peg with power to it?

Could be a bad gauge, or the wire between the gauge and sender unit could either be shorted to ground or "open", depending upon what type of gauge system it is.
Try this, at sending unit, disconnect wire that comes from the gauge, and note position of the gauge needle. Jumper the removed wire to a good ground, and again note the position of the gauge needle. (Obviously, look with the key switch ON both times.)
Should read "full" one way and "MT" the other. (Some gauge systems are designed to read "full" with the wire disconnected, and some are set up the opposite (more common) way, and the gauge reads "MT" with the wire disconnected, NOT sure which system you tractor has.

found an old gauge and tried it and it worked fine, so i think bad gauge. but one more problem found, sending unit shows full when down and empty with float up. traded places on gauge terminals and shows the same. thats strange to have bad gauge and sending unit from different suppliers,but bout my luck.
Run an extra ground wire from the gauge ground to the battery or frame and see it this helps. We had one like that this last summer and when we hooked it up in series, (power to gauge, from gauge to sender and grounded sender), it did the same thing. Even the manufacturer tech told us it should work. We finally grounded the gauge's ground terminal that we thought was for the light and it worked. We also tried two gauges and senders before we found the way to wire it. Gauge manufacturer must have changed the gauge and no knew it.

I will second running another ground like 300 guy said, I ran into that when I was doing my 560, also be absolutely sure your gauge and sender are compatable with each other
