Hi guys I have a question for you guys that have been planting corn for many years
This past fall harvest has been horrible here with the 2 hurricanes and then all the rain leading to the wettest year on record for us
I still have some corn in the field and I know I’m not going to get a lot out of it
Now that leads to my question I know I’m leaving alot of corn in the field this spring when I plant most of that leftover corn is going to sprout everywhere and will hurt my current crop drawing the nutrients from it
Do any of you guys spray for that or is there anything I can spray on the ground to stop them from sprouting
I know I can use a burndown spray but I usually have it in the ground very early and that will sent me back several weeks
I can even use tillage to incorporate the spray if there is anything that will work

If the old corn was round up ready,you're screwed.If not,plant roundup ready next spring and spray. Or you will have to delay planting. Let it grow till the last possible minute and tear it out with 'cold steel' tillage.Or you can put a 'duckfoot' directly in front of the planter openers.They will wipe out any volunteer corn in the row.Then cultivate normally.Anyway you look at it,it is going to be a less than ideal situation.
 
Clethodim with goes by a variety of trade names including
volunteer may be sprayed up to 6 days prior to planting round
up ready corn to kill volunteer corn. I?d also use clethodim to
clean up volunteer corn in soybeans.
 
Ah, contraire, Steve- Irregardless of whatever tillage is done, if this year"s corn was RR, and he plants Liberty Link corn, the Liberty herb will kill the RR vounteer corn. There are LL beans as well. Nice way to switch away from RU and get good weed control.
 
What is your next crop going to be, soybeans?

Or corn again?

What was your corn this year, conventional, RR, or stacked with both RR and Liberty?

There are things to do, but we need more info..... Otherwise we just start guessing and then we start arguing with each other until you give us more guidance as to what
the details are. :)

2018 was certainly a difficult one for many areas.

So your saying last years corn was RR and Liberty resistant??? If it is then you will have few choices. If last years was resistant to one or the other then plant the opposite and spray post emerge. If it was doubles stacked then there is not much to do other than rotate to beans.

None of the herbicides will kill new seedlings if they are the same resistance as what your planting.

Early tillage and then wait for the corn to sprout and then another tillage pass before planting would kill the majority of the volunteer corn.

I do not plant corn that is resistant to both RR and Liberty. That way I can control volunteer corn. A corn plant growing where it is not supposed to be is just another weed.
 
There is several post applied grass killers like Fusilade that will kill RR or Liberty corn. They work only being sprayed on growing corn and are not ground applied.
Price is reasonable also. Rod.
 
How about the moldboard plow and then wait a few
days so what?s there try?s to sprout and then the
field cultivator? Primitive I know but that?s one way
to kill weeds that works pretty good
 
That?s gonna be tough to get good results.

Be very careful of planting restrictions on anything you spray to kill volunteer corn, might have to wait some time to plant corn into that.

I really think beans are going to be your best option, run a version of Select on the beans, or several other grass killers in beans.

It?s just tough to try to kill corn in a corn field, and you don?t have a trait available.
