Tell me about JD 702 wheel rakes?

Tell me about a JD 702 10 wheel rake with a kicker wheel. I put up less than 50 acres of hay and already have a nice rotary rake. I just thought a wider wheel rake might speed things up a little, especially in lighter hay. I know there are heavier rakes out there but I really don't want to spend 7-10k on a rake. How wide of a swath will a 10 wheel rake cover?

I will second that the JD rake is a light duty rake. If your careful they are just OK. It is just a rebadged Tonutti rake. In medium to light grass hay you would be fine.

The Sitrex rake is a much heavier built rake. New Holland, M&W, and CIH rakes are all Sitrex rakes just painted and decaled differently.

Kuhn is making some pretty good rakes now too. H&S is a middle of the road rake to me. Lots of them around here but they are not as heavily built as the Sitrex rake.

I've several rakes in the field raking that resemble the JD model 702. I'll guess a 10 wheel will rake about 20 ft of hay. Down side to them is in heavier hay with the rake wheel frames being between un-raked hay & rake wheels can cause plugging of hay. Plus with a lot of use the pipe frame hinge points become worn/loose allowing for severe windrow variations in widths with clumps of hay. I also think these type rakes don't rake sharp curves or corners very well.

That might be the one made by tonutti. My neighbor has one and it is junk. The frame has been bent or broke several times, and he is easy on stuff. It just has to say John Deere on it and he will buy it. I have a sitrex ten wheel and it has been a good one.
