1949 MF TO20 Valve cover Modification

Hello all. Has anyone ever attempted to swap out the down pipe vent tube for a newer PCV valve? The older TO20's have a vent tube that is permanently attached (older models have a 4 bolt system to allow you to remove tube from cover) to the valve cover.
I am in the middle of a restoration project. I'm in the "put back together" stage and I am cleaning/painting as I go. I just got to the valve cover and have found the tube is heavily clogged. Yes, I get it... clean it out and all is well. I've seen some people stuff steel wool and add a screen to the bottom, but I wanted to know if anyone has deleted this pipe and successfully modded a newer PCV valve/blow off filter?
I was thinking of cutting off the pipe and doing this. Is there so much oil that you need the pipe so that you do not get oil all over the block?
I figured that with the oil pressure so low on these things, maybe I could get away with it? Will the PCV valve need to be cleaned more often?
Thoughts? concerns? Ideas? Pics of your mods if you have any please.

If you did add a PCV valve you would still need the pipe to bring fresh air into the crankcase, same as auto engines have an air breather into the airbox. The draft tube design works just fine, I'd leave it as is. The carb is not designed with a PCV valve to be in place anyway..
