John Deere #18 corn picker question

I am considering purchasing a John Deere 18 corn picker. I've looked at it and seen it run. It runs fine. It is in good shape and kept inside. My question is should I need parts for it where might be some corn picker salvage yards I could contact? I know Deere stopped making parts for this many years ago. Thanks for your assistance.

Not much happening for getting after market parts for it. The Mennonites and Amish are focused on New Idea and JD 300 for reproduction parts. Randomly you have equipment parts yards such as Fry's in Williamsport, PA but I would imagine the selection is sparse. The best thing to do in my mind given the picker in question is to frequently check Craigslist for parts and/or complete machine for sale. Yes, I would imagine that is more than what you want to get into but that is today's price for running a rare machine where the manufacturer for the most part does not support it.

So scarce I would guess it woul be hard to find parts for as In my 75 years have never saw one in person and I have seen a lot of pickers. Have only ever seen 1 or 2 of the 300 pickers and think the one I remember seeing looked like it was abounded. Lots of 227 pickers but after that none.

You might see only a couple of 300 pickers in one locale but across the country they are plentiful and new parts support is fairly good but not perfect. My area was never much for mounted pickers so very very few 227 pickers and even fewer 237 pickers sold new and all but non-existent today near me. I've seen a couple of 18's and it would make sense that they got sold around here back in the day. Craigslist is one of the few places to find them as not everybody is in a hurry to haul off to the scrap yard especially with today's rates. Parts yards are getting very picky in terms of what they buy and don't want stuff that may sit a couple years for a call on it for a part that maybe they can only get 50 bucks for when they spent 100 dollars to buy the machine. The good news is that with scrap prices down 80-90 dollars will buy you a parts machine then you only have to convince the wife that is a good idea.

Certainly something to monitor but it seems the activity there has greatly diminished in the last couple of years. I see a lot of things on Craigslist which is probably due to people having things to sell after an older owner has passed or gone into a nursing home.
