New Idea discbine

There is a auction that has a New Idea 5209 discbine (the newer red ones) it's in good condition as far as looks go, whats it worth and is there anything i should look for when i go look at it?

Surprised you haven?t gotten a reply, those are popular machines.

I have no experience with them, but always hear good things.

Remember they are getting very old for a machine like that as New Idea has not been made for what 15-20? years now. Have no idea where you would go for New Idea parts. The old steel wheel hay rakes and manure spreaders the Amish are making new parts for but rest of line?

They must have just picked one or 2 New Idea machines to continue that way as all production stoped at the New Idea factory in Coldwater, Ohio the year before New Ideas 100 year aniversary and it was closed at that time with prommises to reopen in 6 months that they never did. Made the whole community very mad at the company and for a time any other brands connected with them were also hurt. Many people without a job. EPA will not allow the building to be used for anything as paint may have gone thru the 12" concrete floor and contaminated the soil underneeth it. It was planed to become a museum but EPA stoped that. They did for the hundred year aniversery come and pick up 2 pieces of machinery that I had. I have the wood plack they made up for people at that time. It reads" Thank you for your support and participation in the August 29, 1999 ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE Coldwater, Ohio". New Idea 1899-1999.

The NI 5209 lives on as the Massey 1359. Some parts are still available from Case/IH as the rebranded NI was called the Case/IH 3309. There were two versions of the "RED" machine ..those with a segmented
hex/drive shaft and those with a single piece drive shaft. I believe the serial number break regarding the segmented drive shaft (pod drive shaft)was at serial numbers beginning with an "H".. when Heston bought
them... but it may have been with the 1993 model. The later models had grease-able pods. ..the earlier machines required you to disassemble the pods to grease the gears/bearings.. every 300 or so acres
covered/cut at 5 MPH. The drive/pod shaft on many of the older machine are just plain worn out and could be twisted if the machine ever hit a rock et al.... causing poor or impossible to adjust registration...
However, if taken care of they are good machines, easy to power.. I used a 55 pro HP tractor on mine for years. I bought my 5209 about 12 years ago.... the farmer that owned mine before me took very good care
of it and greased the pods as per the manual, etc... so it was not worn/beat... however a vast majority or these 5209s were run low/dry of grease and would be a bit troublesome.
