Cable plow video

I?ve heard of cable plows, saw one sitting still at a show once.

Here is a video of one working in Australia.

Wow. Lot of setup with the moving anchors and corner pulleys and how many feet of cable to string out? That was a chore to set that deal up!

Cool to see in operation. Perhaps this has been up before, but I never saw it before.

Cable plow

Thanks for posting this Paul. I have never seen this before. I am trying to reason out why it was developed. The things that stand out to me are either ground too wet to drive on or power furnished by a stationary or semi-stationary power source such as a steam engine. Anyone know much about them?

Cable plowing is a European thing that started with stationary steam engines. In the Netherlands this method was used to open ditches to drain marshland. By using a subsoiler pulling a cable that was threaded through clay tile a lot of ground was drained. The idea of pulling a tile plow to lay rolls of plastic tile is not new.

Hi Paul. They also made what they called cultivators that worked the same way, but I think they would be more classed as field cultivators. When the operator of the plow or whatever gets at the end, the steam engine, (as I saw it, one was being used at each end), would roll forward at the end of the field, and the plow operator would turn left an estimated distance that would put him in line for the return trip. The far engine would then do the same, the operator would lower the other side of the plows, get on that seat, and,if at a great distance the engine next to the plow would give a toot to let the far engine know the plow was ready for the return trip.
