New Holland chain balers

I dont remember the fancy tin on them when new. Trainer Imp in Princeton Mo got a preproduction unit to try out, all we had was corn stalks to roll up.

None of mine had the fancy tin on them either . I like the part where he says the bales can take rough handling then the loader picks it up and the bottom falls off which is typical of the old chain balers the newer ones make as nice of bale as any and I could never figure out why same twine arms and twine boxes .

The old NH chain balers were probably the most sturdy, bale-anything balers on the planet.

I've been running an 846 for over 20yrs.

Bought another one a few years back.

Only weak point in the 853 is the tensioning system. These balers use air bags instead of springs. They get real pricey when you need to replace them.

These old balers will make very good bales if operated properly. Narrow windrows, weaving in a square pattern to pack the outside edge of the bale in the chamber. Tighter, denser, bales can be made when you reduce ground speed while keeping PTO speed high. Never do a lazy S weave, make it a sharp turn, and keep it there for a while, then repeat.

I've wrapped thousands of bales with the ol' gurlz.

Updated to a NH650, and although it makes a very fast,, very tight bale,, it's not as good at coarse stemmed crops. The old chain balers would bale virtually anything you could imagine.

I think I always tried to bale to fast about 6 mph but i
think I should have baled at 3 or 4 . The newer
ones like the 853 and 855 will make a nice bale at 7
mph I put quite a bit of hay through an 855 and it
would make a nice bale at a good operating speed

With my chain balers I like to rake as large of a windrow as I can straddle with the tractor ,run slow ground speed and keep the PTO RPM up.Makes the best bale that way.
