NI 19 PTO spreader floor chain drive not working

My old backup manure spreader has been sitting for a year. Yesterday I decided to give it a cleanup and test. Beaters work, but the Floor chain has stopped moving.
I took the shield off and found that the springs had broken that hold the pawl against the big gear. I have never looked under the shield before and don't really understand how this mechanism works. Does anyone know where to find an explanation of the drive mechanism? Since it has stopped, I can not scope out the problem. It has a big gear and an arm coming out of the gear box. Has anyone seen a video of this mechanism in action?

The ratchet should involve two pawls that are spring loaded. When the arm moves in one direction, one pawl engages the gear to rotate the drive shaft a bit, while the other pawl holds the gear so it does not go backward, as the arm retreats. The control lever sets the distance the gear advances, thus controlling floor speed.

Thanks, I think the springs are broken on both pawls. I think the backup pawl is underneath the gear box. Incidentally, I am going to drain the old milky oil out of the gear box, flush it with diesel fuel than refill. What weight oil works best in those old gear boxes? Most of the use will be in the winter.

Next job is to clean 50 years of oil and crusted mud off of the mechanism so I can work on it. I have ordered a manual for it, but don't know if it will explain the mechanisms.

When working it is a darn good old spreader. Ugly, but tough.
