Want to Get a Shredder and Pull Behind Mower?

I have a 52 8N C that's not pretty but runs great. I just rewired it and it has the Flame Thrower 12 Volt coil. This spring I want to buy a new 5 ft. shredder (the existing 5 ft. shredder is on it's last leg) and maybe a 4 ft pull behind mower.
This guy at tractor place told me once that the gas tractors just don't have the horse power to even pull a 4 ft. mower. But if your tractor runs top notch, shouldn't I be fine?

Was going to get them from Tractor supply in the spring as I don't need a high dollar Brush Hogg or anything?

The mower performance depends completely on what you're cutting, and how fast you want to be able to drive.

A very general rule of thumb I've heard thrown around is 10hp per foot of mower, and I think that's a good guide for carefree operation in the toughest situations, but it's a little misleading in that you can still do a lot with less power than that.

If you're mowing heavy brush, or really tall thick wet grass you'll be under-powered and you'll have to slow your ground speed, perhaps significantly. But - sometimes that's not an important factor if it's a small area and time isn't critical.

If you are just cutting grass you should be fine. It might take more rounds than a bigger tractor. If you have some sprouts you will miss the horse power.

I have a 6ft woods pull type I pull with a "B" Farmall and a 6ft 3pt I pull with a 35hp Kioti. Both adequate power. Any rotary mower can stall a tractor if the bladed dig into the ground. I have used an 8n with a 5gt mower that worked well.

Did he happen to have a diesel tractor to sell you?[/quote]

Yes, it was the local Kubota dealership, but people would put their old N's or whatever on consignment and the guy told me they had no problem selling any used tractors.

Thanks Richard, Nick, and Brendon for clearing that up. I'm fully sold on the 5 ft. mower now. Nice pic Richard! If that was the spring of 55, I think I was the gleam in my mama's eye.

When we used our Ford 8n for everything, the 8n ran a 5 ft brush hog fine except if you hit a pile of dirt then it could stall. The tractor only had the adapter to the mower, no overrun clutch with weeds above waste high. When we bought a 8n side mount motor from someone, he says they would run a 6 ft with out an issue (I have to see that first).

The person who told you that about gas tractors didn't know what he was talking about. Horsepower is horsepower and your 25hp 8N is just as capable as any other 25hp tractor regardless of what fuel it is burning. I'd go with the 5-ft mower and simply overlap a bit if conditions get tough enough that you are short of power. My 20hp Deere M (yes, with a gas engine) is happy with a 4-ft mower in waist-high grass and weeds so your tractor should easily handle a 5-footer in any normal conditions.

Thanks for the replies. When I bought my 8N C from neighbor who was a New Holland mechanic, I got an overpriced paint job! He did overhaul the motor It does get very good compression, and put a new radiator on it, but that's it. So I put a carb on it, governor, starter, hydrollic piston, PTO shaft, wiring, and one of those coils. It runs great now!

There's a tractor place close by that measures HP at the PTO. The 8N was originally rated 27.3 at at the engine and 23.2 at the PTO and I think it get's more than that now? But I will get the 4 ft. mower and 5ft shredder. Thanks for feedback.

I proudly call it my "HOBBY PIT"!

Two kinds of 8N tractors those that need work and those that will need work.

Gary, I know you don't like 8N's, but mine has been in the family since new and has done tons of work on 4 farms. It still gets used every week. Pulls a 5 ft brush hog just fine and have dragged huge logs out of the woods for years with it. Also mow about 2 acres of lawn with a 5 foot finish mower every summer.
It is the same age as me and cranks easier than I do.
Photo of my Dad and me about 1955 on the Ford.

I've hauled over 3000 n ford's to the scrap yard in the past 40 years. I've seen a lot of 5' rotary mowers sitting used once or twice. I would think twice about getting a 5' mower.

I sold mowers for many years for a company similar to TSC. Most of the time I sold a 5 foot rotary cutter (brush hog) to owners of N series Ford tractors that were using them in conditions where the land had been cared for but maybe not mowed in the last year or two. A few needed to mow land that had been let go for a while or had tall species plants so we sold them a 4 foot rotary cutter. I don't recall one dissatisfied customer. Hopefully, your tractor is in good mechanical condition and putting out original rated power. All tractors are subject to wear and a worn out tractor regardless of being gas or diesel will not have full performance.
