JD 30 series PTO braking

Refresh my memory again about the proper way to stop an operating PTO shaft? Using a 30 series JD tractor and a 5 foot brush mower. I just want to extend the life of the braking mechanism as much as possible...

Idle tractor down, let shaft slow down, then step on PTO pedal,
and then slowly step on the pedal to completely stop the shaft?

Like they said, trying to stop a brush hog with the PTO brake will tear it out or wear it out very fast. I use a PTO over-running clutch, works great. I use them on all my john deere's and 560 farmall. john

I tried an over running clutch and it lasted for an hour or so before the roll pin in that clutch sheered and the pto shaft came off and bounced around until wedged into a certain position. I won't use the brake anymore. Thanks for the help.
