McCormic IH Sheller Crank Question

Is there any reason why I shouldn't turn the crank from the flywheel side? The crank side is a bit "chunky," like there's an issue with the gears, so I swapped the handle to the flywheel side. I did a 50 pound bag with that setup yesterday and wasn't too bad

I have half a ton of popcorn to shell so I'll have to figure out whats wrong and fix it later, but don't want to do more harm. I'm pretty sure I'm not since the flywheel side is made to run a pulley, but this is my first rodeo so I'm being cautious.

If I do this right, there should be a couple photos. Of of the unit as normal, and one of some cracking I'm going to have to repair.

I have no idea where you are but I know of one that is just for parts and avaible, Northeast Indiana. It is stuck ans sheat metal and legs bad. I was going to just tear it down to see what the insides look like.

I'm in Colorado. I cracked it open last night for the heck of it, then put it back together. It looks like the crank arm hole is really egged out. So for now I'll keep it on the pulley side even though it turned 1/4 the speed it would from the other side. Shelled about 40# yield that way and it wasn't too bad.

Unless I can find another 3-way pillar block, I'll first weld this crack. Then maybe mill out the crank hole 1 1/4" and install an oilite bushing. Or rig up an electric motor.

A motor ended up being my friend. Rigged this up, ran about 300 pounds of popcorn through. Worked like a champ. I ended up putting a spare cultivator shovel on the board to tension the belt instead of my foot.
