JD sickle mowers

I would like an opinion on which is a better mower or the least troublesome ones : JD #10 or #50 or an IH #100 balanced head mower ? It will mainly be used on road side ditches. Thanks, Chris

I have a 10 that we use to trim field edges and have never had any problems. I have bought one for parts but have not needed any yet. Neighbor had a 50 and never had any problems with it. Tom

Never around any of those mentioned, have been around many others. All ptiman type. I assume the Deeres you mention are pitman type. A pitman type the bar CANNOT be angled down for mowing in a ditch bank that I assume you are talking about. All I know about a pitman less mower I have read on here, that includes the IH 100 mower is that they will work at a downward angle on ditch banks but better make sure the tractor is on solid ground before you are laying under it in the ditch.

Use a IH 110 side mount to mow ditches, road sides, and creek blanks. Besides broken guard or section no trouble at all. Now mind you this is not always weeds or grass, 1" or larger saplings are no problem, just slow down if they are large. If I was looking for a replacement then another IH would be my choice.

I use my JD50 mower mostly to mow fence rows. The break-away mechanism works quite well - glad it does.
There is a zerk on the bottom of the 50 wobblebox that is hard to see - don't miss it.

good morning chris, john here I bought 2 ih-100 sickle mowers last fall for my little haying operation here, small fields, rolling and hilly, I was using a case t-10 sickle mower but it really struggled in the heavy alfalfa/timothy hay. the case t-10 has a pitman arm, the ih-100 is a belt drive balance head, faster sickle speed, way smoother and walks through the heavy hay like I was mowing the lawn! here's a couple of pics of the ih-100 in action.

I went from 3 + hours to an hour and a 1/2 to cut the same field.

I have an old 100 series IH that was bought used on a farm sale in 1970. The previous owner worked the dickens out of it, always bragging about how fast he could mow. I ended up with it 7 years ago and aside from the drive pin for the sickle I haven’t replaced anything except for guards and sections. It will cut through hay so thick and tangled I can’t even tell it was cut, it just stays thick and tangled after it is cut. The old #5 Deere I had previously wouldn’t have had a ghost of a chance of cutting that kind of a tangle.

Don't think I have even seen a dozen pitmanless mowers in my days. Mower sales had stoped before they came about. Ones that wanted a mower still had a good unit so did not buy a different mower. Mower-conditioners had taken over sales at that time with no new mowers being sold. Just different areas.
