  • I just bought a John Deere FB-B grain drill with double disc openers. I notice the discs are pretty loose. Are there bearings in there to replace or is that just how they are? Looks like a plug in the end of the hub. Anything I should know about this drill? Thanks

Plug in end of hub probably cover the allen head of bolt to hold them on, one right hand one left hand bolt per pair of blades. Was how IHC had it. For wht tipe of bearing just go to the JD parts lokup page and look at the parts book.

John Deere had a plain bearing option or a the
roller bearing option the plain bearing you can
tighten the roller bearing you run till it falls off and
then buy a new bearing . Shoup has the disc
bearing and all for about 18$

SV, I hope that makes more sense to you than is does to me!

There?s a hard iron bearing and anti friction bearing
option . The hard iron has a grease zerk at the top
of each opener. The anti friction has no zerk .
Reading in the manual you can repack the anti
friction bearing and there is also a shim you can use
to take up slop . The plain bearing you can tighten
and a fiber washer

The take up washer is still available

Not familiar with that old of double disk openers, but if it has the same chilled steel bearings as the single disk openers, I may have some of the NOS parts like the felt washers and retainers if you need them. I replaced mine with the sealed bearing disks many years ago.

I have the cast iron hub that is riveted onto the disc. They are pretty loose on there. John Deere wants $98 for the disc opener assembly. And to buy just the hub and bearing it’s almost $120. I would need 30 for a 15 hole drill so that prices them out. Not spending $3000 on a $700 drill. My disc opener comes off by removing a 3/4 head plug and then unscrewing the assembly though the hole with a 3/8” extension and ratchet. Can I shim it somehow to take some slip out or can I convert it to a sealed bearing disc opener?

According to the book you can repack that iron
bearing and the adjust it if I read it right and you can
add a new felt washer then if it rubs the cast iron
opener housing you can grind some of that casting
down so the discs will spin freely
