How much hp is required to run a Claas 44s round baler? Anyone know the weight and dimensions of the baler for shipping? Thanks

Might be better to state what tractor you have. 40 horse may not be big enough.100 horse is probably plenty.Anytime I've inquired about shipping an implement, all they ask is "how many miles".

I currently have an oliver 770-- 52 hp and an MF 15-- 58 hp. Would consider getting a larger tractor for this baler if necessary. I'm thinking of moving the baler myself

I would think any tandem axle 'deckover' trailer would haul it. I have seen many round balers pulled by JD 720/30,3010;IH 560 and other similar size tractors. The Howells who post here pull a Krone round baler with a JD 70.A friend here pulls a large size JD round baler with a 5610 Ford.

The 44s weighs 3500 pounds. Take a spare tire (6 bolt implement), a jack and some bearing grease. Pack the bearings and drag it home. That's by far the easiest solution. Throw a set of mag lights on the back and TIE them on.
The baler, as per Claas.. REQUIRES 55 PTO hp to run. If you want production out of it, bank on 75 hp. If you've got hills or you're baling silage it needs power. We ran ours for many years with a Ford 5610 which is 62 pto HP. That included a lot of silage and hills. It got along fine... but more power will get more done.

I run an OMC595 drum baler (big 5x6 bale) with a JD5420 which is 65HP PTO. Works fine. May be slow by some folks standards, but is OK by me.

You most assuredly would not turn the equivalent Claas with 65 hp. Once again, the minimum static requirement on the 44s is 55 PTO hp. Baling wet silage... I've brought a Ford 5610 to it's knees trying to tie the bale off. In dry hay it was just slightly more than enough. You don't have the option with these balers to tie off sooner. The bale doesn't harden off and it won't make enough shell to store if you try to dump it too soon.

My bad...apparently all drum balers are not a like. Wish I could afford a Claas. but for grass horse hay the old OMC is OK.

It was tested at 62 hp, not that that is a large difference... but keep in mind at PTO speed it makes high 50's, not full rated power.
