Tiller for 8N

I have a 1952 Ford 8N and somewhere I heard about being able to lower the gear ratio on the PTO unit to make it usable with a rototiller implement. Do any of you have any details on how this works and where I should start?
Thank you.

You do not want to slow the pto speed,
You need to slow the ground speed of the tractor,
Years ago they made a gear reduction you could add to the transmission, am sure they are still around, but expect they are very expensive and would require mechanic to install,

I have a TO35 Ferguson, it has a low range 1st gear that works well with a tiller,
The fords with the 5 speed transmissions might go slow enough to use with a tiller,

Be sure to check it out before you buy a tiller, then find out it does not work well with your tractor,

The gear reduction was a Sherman, and it slowed the pto down as well so you did not gain anything for a tiller.

There was a rare Howard Rotovator device that would allow tillers to work, but there are not many of those out there. And yes, major surgery to install. You need to separate the rear end shaft from the pto shaft to allow thrm to be at different speeds from each other, not just an external add on deal.

The simplest solutions is to find a tractor with low enough gears to run a tiller. Truthfully a Ford 8N is one of the worst to try it with. They had a high low gear. You really would need to get up into the three cylinder Fords to get the six speed transmission to really use a tiller correctly. The Ferguson 135s had a six speed that did not work too bad.

The gearboxes your hearing about that slow the tractor down also slow the PTO shaft down. The gearbox goes between the clutch and input shaft on the transmission. It is not a simple thing to install.

Well that's way too much work involved for this old lady and that old tractor. Maybe I'll just stick with my old Troy-Bilt tiller.
Thank you all for the very useful information I greatly appreciate it.

Consider hiring someone with a tractor and tiller to come in once a year and do the heavy work, then you can do the finer work with the Troybilt.
