A while back I recall you posted a picture of a tool you fabricated to set mower guards. Can you put it up again, please. I have a b*tch of a time setting the guards on my 1207 and I'd like to make one. Seems I can't get them right with a hammer.

Thanks, Randy. Does it bend the guard or the plate it's bolted to? I just put new guards from Shoup on mine. It's better than before but still causes the hay to collect on the cutterbar in one area and doesn't move up to the rolls.
 
If the hay is collecting on the pan behind the guards, it sounds more to me like the pan must have a bend in it, or the reel is not running close enough to the guards. Spin the reel around till the spring teeth on the reel are at the closes point to the guard, then sight down the length of the knife , checking for any change in the distance from tooth to guard.
 
A little bit of both. Those guards won't bend very far,but they have a little give in them.
 
I have the tines set real close to the knife. Seems like it wads up on top of the knife and hangs down in front. That pushes the uncut hay down and the knife skims over it and misses. I'm going to play with the tine timing to see if that helps.
 
I would bet that your plate/pan the guards bolts to is bent. It is a common thing to happen. It has been driven across a stump/dirt pile/etc. and bent up. This makes the guards in that area be high and the pan behind it rolled back away from the reel further. These two things will cause the hay to bunch like your talking about.

The fix is to remove the sickle and guards. Then straighten the pan either with a BIG adjustable wrench or port-a-power pushing the pan up from the back side. I have been able to used a floor jack with a 4x4 stood on top of it if the bend is not too bad.
